Shayla's big sister Jolene is a talented NCAA gymnast who
recently graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Computer
Aided Design. She competed at Level 10 while at Orlando Metro and made it all the way to the Junior Olympic nationals
twice! She started gymnastics a year before Shayla did, in 1992, at the Academy of Elite gymnastics. There, Jolene progressed from beginner to Level 8. In 1999, the
Worleys left their old gym and headed to nearby Orlando Metro. Jolene competed Level 8 throughout 2000 and moved up to Level 9 in 2001. She was slated to advance to Level 10 in 2002, but she unfortunately broke her ankle and stayed at Level 9 for another year.
Jolene's second season as a Level 9 proved to be a very successful one. She won bars, floor exercise and all-around at the 2002 State meet. At Regionals, she won bars and floor again, and advanced to Level 9 Nationals, where she took first place on floor exercise. In 2003, she moved up to Level 10, where she placed sixth on bars and fourth on floor and finished seventh all-around at Regionals. Her success at Regionals
qualified her to the Level 10 National meet, where she finished 35th. In 2004,
she placed fourth all-around at the Florida state meet and easily qualified to
both the regional championship and her second nationals.
2008:
Co-Captain, She was selected as the MAC Gymnast of the Year as
well as Senior of the Year by after earning 10 individual event wins and four
all-around honors.
2007:
Had a career year during the 2007 campaign, won 13 individual
event titles in the ’07 season (four on the floor, three on the beam and one on
the bars), finished second or better in seven of the nine meets where she
competed in the all-around, including five first place honors, first all-around
MAC Champion at EMU since 1993, and qualified for NCAA Regional Gymnastics
Championships in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
2006:
She competed in all of the 2006 meets and in the all around in all but one,
finished second or better in the all round in seven of the nine meets, including
three all-around championships, won eight individual event titles in the ‘06
season (four on the bars, two on the beam and two on the floor), named the MAC
Gymnast of the Week for the period ending March 5, after leading the Eagles to a
tri-meet victory over Rutgers and Cornell, as well as a dual meet victory over
Ursinus,
2005:
Competed in all 11 meets and qualified for the NCAA Regional at the University
of Alabama, the lone EMU gymnast to compete in the all-around in all 11 meets,
named Co-MAC Gymnast of the Week after winning the all-around at MIT with a
score of 38.600, she also garnered first-place honors on the bars with a 9.750,
a second-place finish on the vault with a 9.550, a third-place finish on the
floor with a 9.700, and a fourth-place finish on the beam with a 9.600. |
