From Ms. Worley:
"As you probably know,
Shayla has a 99% chance of making the USA Olympic Gymnastics team this year.
This past August she competed at the US Gymnastics Championships, placing 2nd
all-around, and making the USA National Team for the 5th consecutive year.. In
September she competed on the USA Team at the World Gymnastics Championships in
Germany, where for the first time in the 40-year history of the competition, on
foreign soil, the USA placed first, bringing home the coveted gold medal,
beating reigning China by nearly a point.
On March 1 she will be competing in the American Cup in Madison Square Garden,
televised live on NBC at 1:00 EST. On June 4&5, 2008 she will once again
compete at the US Championships, then on June 19, the Olympic Trials; and on
8-8-08 the Olympics in Beijing.
Here's my reason for writing to you, and my problem. For me, my other three
children, my mother and Shayla's father to attend the Olympics in Beijing, we
need approximately $10,000 per person. That breaks down at $6,000 per person
for event tickets (which are all sold out, but available only in packages with
tour agencies), hotel and 2 meals per day. I haven't booked my air fare, but
understand it to be approximately $4,000. Call it roughly $10,000 per person,
or $60,000 for the 6 of us.
I had no idea it would be that expensive. I actually thought $20,000 would get
my whole family over there. hahaha
Because of all the other traveling I've been doing with my Shayla's
international competitions, plus
her older sister
is a collegiate gymnast at Eastern Michigan University (and the 2007
all-around MAC conference champion), an d
I attend all
of her home meets, for some reason I can't seem to find much
time to work the hours I need to right now. I've been a court reporter for the
last 30 years.
I think I've been doing a pretty good job at being a good mother, but my court
reporting has seen a big time cut. I owned my own business for nearly 25 years
when Shayla made the US National Team, and I made the decision to merge my
clients in with another firm in Orlando so that I could take up and go at the
drop of a hat if I needed to go off to a competition or some other
gymnastics-related matter, like a team meeting for all the potential Olympic
parents in Houston this past October, or to Frosted Pink, or an appearance on
The Today Show in November.
I've done a bit of scouting around the community, trying to get some
financial support for this trip, and have raised only $750 so far. I'm
wondering if you'd consider helping to support our cause to get my family
over to Beijing. Since Shayla is maintaining her NCAA eligibility so that
she can do gymnastics in college, she is unable to earn any money from
this sport in any way. The NCAA does have a by-law that actually allows
for the families of Olympic athletes to raise money for travel expenses,
so I have had an account set up at the American Momentum Bank in Orlando,
in the name
of The Worley Family Olympic Travel Fund. "
All checks should be made out that
way and mailed to:
American Momentum Bank, 301 East
Pine Street, Suite 1000, Orlando, FL 32801.
Or they could be mailed to my
office,
The Reporting Company, 201 North
Magnolia Avenue, Suite 101, Orlando, FL 32801.
